Magic Weekly Update

Friday_Night_Magic_3Hope you’re ready to play this weekend Planeswalkers, because we’ve got lots of opportunities for you. It has already been three weeks since Shadows Over Innistrad  released and that means it’s Game Day weekend in stores all over the country! We’ll see how the events from the Pro Tour will affect your play this weekend and what special prizes you have to look forward to. Let’s get started!

Pro Tour Fallout:

Firstly, let’s give credit where credit is due. Steve Rubin emerged as the champion of Pro Tour last week, booting out the former reigning World Champion with a White-Green token deck:

Another first for the Pro Tour, was that the Top 8 Players all had different decks. That’s right, each final round player had a different strategy and archetype to win which just goes to show you how varied the Standard format is right now. Not even the pros could decide on the most powerful decks. This is the type of Standard that makes Magic really fun to play. You’ll see many of the same cards between each deck, but each goes about victory in a different way so you never know what to expect. If you’d like in depth deck lists and analysis of all 8 decks used by the top players you can check them out here. Also, take a look at the most crucial lessons learned from the Pro Tour, and see what you’ll be dealing with at Friday Night Magic and Game Day events up until the new set arrives. Speaking of which-

It’s Game Day Baby:

I’m not going to hide it, Game Day weekend is usually one of my favorite times in every new set. For the uninitiated, Game Day is a special tournament held three weeks after every new release where players can receive unique prizes and promotions. Shadows Over Innistrad  Game Day will be this Saturday and Sunday at any participating stores across the world including our Oogie Games Niagara Falls location. As I said before, with the huge amount of variety going on in Standard, you’re bound to see all sorts of different decks and personal tweaks of the decks used by pros. Now is the time when all your scheming and deck building comes into action! If you’re feeling confident about your deck, if you’ve managed to crush all your friends in casual play, this is the perfect time to pit it against a gauntlet of players and see how well it truly works. But now, the thing everybody is waiting for, the prizes:

First and foremost, anyone who even enters a Game Day event gets this participation promo, a rather sinister and awesome full art version of Incorrigible Youths. Each store only has a limited amount though, so make sure you call and reserve your spot for either April 30 or May 1.

Now, if you manage to make it to the Top 8, you’ll have a full art Anguished Unmaking waiting for you.

And, finally, the champion will receive this unique, one-of-a-kind playmat and the rights to brag about his victory for the next several months. For more information on Game Day events, or to find a store near you, see Magic’s official page for details.

But Wait There’s More-In Our Own Backyard:

As if Game Day wasn’t exciting enough, we’ve got a Grand Prix going on right around the corner in Toronto! If you’ve ever given thought to becoming a pro player, Grand Prix’s are the perfect stepping stone. These events hold host to hundreds of players, several of them pro, who gather for the chance at a $10,000 grand prize! For more casual players, these are still ridiculously fun events to just gather and play with several like-minded people in friendly competition. Don’t let the pro talk scare you, the majority of judges and players will help you learn and play even if you’re relatively new.

For those who can’t make it or don’t want to take the long drive to our Canadian neighbors, the entire event will be live streamed on beginning Saturday at 1:00 PM. You can also follow along with Twitter and the most recent updates with the Grand Prix Toronto headquarters. Finally, for more information on both the Grand Prix and Game Day, here’s an article to summarize it all for you.

So whether you’re going to Game Day or Grand Prix, I wish you the best of luck and that you, above all else, have fun! Get out there and give it your all Planeswalkers!

Tabletop Madness:

I’d like to close out this week with an unexpected, but great announcement Wizards made earlier this week, especially for you fans of Dungeons and Dragons and Magic, or tabletop games in general. If you really enjoyed the latest Zendikar block and find yourself missing it or wishing for more, get ready to revisit the plane in an entirely different way. It turns out Magic and D&D have teamed up to bring you Plane Shift: Zendikar!

Serving as an alternate rulebook to D&D, Plane Shift: Zendikar allows you to take the world, lore, and races of Zendikar and turn them into your own D&D campaign. Going by the fifth edition of the D&D rules, the book is filled to the brim with unique and detailed artwork of Zendikar and its inhabitants as well as all the rules and character guidelines to get you started.

Best of all, the entire document is free to download from Magic’s site. If you try out a campaign and enjoy it, you can let Wizards know with the feedback survey provided. If enough people enjoy it, maybe we’ll see more team ups like this. I would personally love to have a D&D campaign based around Innistrad.

That’s it for this week. As always, thanks for reading!
