Magic Weekly Update

Friday_Night_Magic_3IT’S HERE! For those of you participating in pre-release events, you’ll finally be able to get your hands on Shadows Over Innistrad  this weekend. For those not doing so, you’ve got less than one week to go before intro packs and fat packs grace the stores. Other than that, not a whole lot of news this week that hasn’t already been mentioned, so get out there planeswalkers and let the madness consume you!

Friday Night Shenanigans:

Dozens crowded into Oogie Games’ Niagara Falls location for our midnight pre-release, playing right up until five in the morning! Amidst broken hearts and lucky card pulls, noteworthy mentions go to the man who received two Sigarda, Heron’s Grace, the small and lucky group of people who received new Planeswalker cards and another man with two Avacyn’s. If you still want to get in on the action and receive some powerful cards of your own, it’s not too late! Pre-release runs April 2-3 and another tournament will be held on Sunday. Call to reserve now! If you’re unsure of what to expect, let me take you through a visual guide:

Avacyn greeted our players as they walked into the store, sporting a nice, “DO NOT TOUCH,” sign (I mean with that look, who would?). Next, players were ushered into the party room where they were given their pre-release packs and began making decks. If you’re afraid you won’t have enough lands to make a deck, have no fear we’ve got plenty for you to borrow-

After taking 40 minutes to open boosters and build decks, the tournament officially began. Players were matched together for five different rounds of play with best 2 out of 3 being the winner. As the night went on, the list whittled its way down to the top 15. These were the lucky ones to receive prizes.

Now, as we all know, games in Magic: The Gathering can take forever-especially with you control freaks out there. Luckily, each round has a 30 minute time limit to keep it from going too long. Once it hits zero, you only have a certain number of turns to finish and if neither person finishes by then, the result is a draw-

A quick congratulations to the top 15 winners (and I hope you’ll allow me a moment to brag for being one of them), and a big invite to those still on the fence about going to pre-releases. Everyone had a great time, and it’s a fun way to get your hands on a new set early! If you’re new to events like this, Magic’s official site has got an excellent guide on what to expect, and how to make the most out of your experience. Lastly, check out some pre-release stories from players all across the world. Have fun delving into the secrets of Innistrad!

A Little Something For Beginners:

As I’ve mentioned before, one of the greatest tools for new players is something called Intro Packs. Available from every set, these professionally pre-made 60 card decks come ready to play right out of the box, lands and all. They’re always fairly good and each one comes with a valuable rare. Not only that, but once you’re feeling more confident about building decks, it’s an excellent base to tweak with and develop your own strategy.

Now, there are five different intro packs, each with its own strategy and style for all types of players. If you don’t know what kind you’d be most interested in, no worries! Wizards officially released the decklists for every intro pack here. Now, you can view and investigate (pun intended) each deck carefully to determine which you want before going to pick it up in stores on April 8.

Story Time:

It’s surprising that, even with all the cards revealed, there’s still so much about this set’s story that nobody knows. Don’t get me wrong, I love piecing together the story from themes and flavor text on cards. For those wishing for a more concrete story, Magic has been posting chapters of the official tale right up to release. They’ve already covered the new werewolf planeswalker, Avacyn’s sudden and brutal transformation and the long awaited meeting between Liliana and Jace that I predicted a while back. It looks like, in this weeks chapter, we’ll finally get some more answers (and even more questions) about the madness corrupting Innistrad and what Nahiri and Sorin are up to at Markov Manor.

That’s all for this week folks! Thank you for reading!
