When NetherRealm announced Kombat Pack 2 my hopes were extremely high for the inclusion of one of my favorite comic book characters, Spawn, especially after the rumor that Spawn creator, Todd McFarlane, had given the OK. While this expansion of available fighters did not include Spawn, there is plenty for fans to whet their appetite on: New stages (the pit!), new costumes and 4 new fighters. There is no specific release date, although it has been suggested that this content could come sometime in April 2016. There is currently some confusion about the platforms that this content will be available for once it releases; some are worried that it will not make it to PC.
Goro – Included in Kombat pack 2 is the veteran fighter Goro. Goro’s first appearance was in the original Mortal Kombat as a sub-boss to Shang Tsung. He is not a new addition to MKX, however, and was included as a pre-order bonus. The Shokan warrior returns to MKX with his 4 arms to pound competitors into submission.
Leatherface – Continuing the tradition started in MK9 with Freddy Krueger and continuing with MKX’s inclusion of Jason, Netherrealm have added horror icon, Leatherface, to the roster. There is a segment of the MK community that is questions the additions of these kinds of characters, however, it’s arguable that without the classic slasher horror movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre we would never have something like Mortal Kombat. Since it is his first appearance in an MK game it’s difficult to discern any particular variation or set of moves from the trailer, but wielding his recognizable chainsaw and iconic skin-mask, Leatherface looks to add to the pools of blood.
Bo Rai Cho – Bo Rai Cho is a bit of a goofy character whose first appearance was in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. He is well known for his drunkenness and his signature “puke puddle” move. While his portrayal in MKX was slightly more serious than the ways that he has been portrayed in the past, the reveal of his moves indicates that he will continue to be the inebriated slob that we know and love. In previous MK games he had a short staff as a weapon, however, this trailer appears to show him using a hooked weapon similar (but not identical) to Kabal’s hookswords. It’s easy to see the humorous appeal of a character who belly bumps you to the ground and flip-farts on your face in a game full of guts and broken bones.
Tri-Borg – Fans have invariably been clamoring for Sektor, Cyrax and Smoke from the launch of Mortal Kombat X. Little did we know, we would be getting all three in a singular character. Being that each fighter in MKX has 3 different fighting variations, this is an extremely clever way of incorporating these 3 popular characters. While it did not include much footage of each variation, the trailer shows off some recognizable moves for each character: Sektor is back with his missiles and rocket punch; Cyrax has his buzz saw and bombs; Smoke can still teleport and draw players in for a free hit with the trident spear he emits from his chest. Tri-borg the cyborg is a welcome addition to MKX.
Xenomorph (Alien) – This character is the most curious addition of these 4 new fighters. While not a horror icon in the same way that Freddy, Jason or Leatherface are, Xenomorph brings its own type of terror to MKX. Showing off a fighting style reminiscent of Baraka, with arm blades that can slice and dice opponents, the Xenomorph looks to overwhelm opponents with speed. It’s hard to tell whether the arm blades are part of a variation or will be with the Xenomorph in each fighting style, but the character appears to be fast and violent, perfect for inclusion on the MK roster. Also, Alien vs. Predator…that is all.
